The cost of owning a new photocopier machine

Like all other electronic products, the value of a photocopier machine depreciates fast. While a used iPhone 7 may still hold 60 percent of its value after a year, the same is not true for a photocopier machine.

More often than not, you would find it difficult to even trade in a used copier to a second-hand dealer for 10 percent of its original price. The reason is because this piece of machine requires regular maintenance to keep it working. Once the service warranty period of the photocopier expires, it becomes a cheap plastic that only takes up space in your office.

If you had read my previous blog on “buying or leasing expensive copier“, you would be surprised on how much savings you could draw by just changing your strategy to go for a used copier that comes with an extended service warranty instead. However, such practices have not been popular in our culture since we have been paying too much attention to new products. It is only until recently that used copier has gathered interest due to the economic slowdown in the recent years.

Factors That Determine The Copier's Performance

On the contrary, used copiers have always been popular among our neighbouring countries like Malaysia or Thailand. In fact, it is common to spot a used copier machine on a commercial building or even in big printing firm. Having said that,  there are many of us choose to believe in the sales talk to just buy a new copier to have a peace of mind. Though it makes a lot of sense that old stuff tends to break down more often, but the thing to look out for while searching for a used printing copier is whether it comes with a comprehensive service warranty or not.

Another popular belief is that,  if the copier machine is new, therefore it should last longer. Yes, it should unless the machine could manage your daily printing volume. Most copier machines start losing its performance begin to break down frequently on the second year because the users’ printing volume have exceeded the machine’s printing capacity. Therefore, if you are running on a tight budget, it is better to own a used yet sturdy copier that is right for your printing usage rather than to get a new but flimsy machine that couldn’t cope with your printing volume at the end of the day.
